Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
The kids are busy reading chapter books in class. Some like them so much they are bringing them home! It has been neat to see them loving time to read their books and being so excited about them!
Ask your child what book he/she is reading. Some are on their first book, others their second, and a few the third one! They should be finished with at least the first one they started by next Monday. I remind them of this daily.
Reading Counts Goals are due by March 25 (next Wednesday). Most kids are well on their way or even above where they need to be! Ask your child to login so you can see their progress. A report will be sent home in the report card.
Reading Logs are still on Google Classroom. Everyone seems to be enjoying this change. I did change them slightly for this week. Instead of four short entries, this week they are writing two longer entries. Last week and at the end of this week, students wrote journal entries about the books they are reading. That is what they are doing on the reading logs. Here is a sample journal starter:

These reading log entries should have topic sentences, evidence from the book, and a closing sentence.
*Reading Summative is next Monday, March 23. Students will have to read one informational piece of text and fictional piece and answer questions. There is also a short writing piece for each piece of text.
Key ideas covered: quoting from the text, theme, compare/contrast, text structure, point of view, vocabulary word and context clues, main idea and details, how an author uses reasons and evidence

Reading Update 3/9
Spring is coming! The weather was nice so hopefully everyone enjoyed it.
*We are reading chapter books in class currently. Ask your child what book she/he is reading. I chose about 20 and let students pick from them. They seem to be enjoying their choices! I am encouraging them to take them home if they like them to finish them faster. Each day, we are reading for a certain period of time and then students are writing summaries and sharing them with their peers. It's neat to hear them discuss books!
*Books will be finished by March 23.
*Reading Counts goals are due by March 25. Each student has met with me regarding this. Ask your child to see his/her progress. Goals are all in the computer and students simply need to login and click Check My Progress.
*I am reading aloud the book Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library. The kids love it so far! Ask them who Kyle Keeley and Mr. Lemoncello are. See the link below to read about the book.

Reading Update 3/2
Our PARRC tests went off great! The kids all worked hard and tried their best...that's all I can ask for.
The last few days in class, we have been working on a project related to disasters like tornadoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, volcanoes, oil spills, etc. Ask your child which topic he/she chose! Each student had to create a written piece based on notes they took, a visual piece, and an advice section. The projects get presented tomorrow. Look for pictures soon for these projects. Everyone worked VERY hard to create something unique and great! Ask your child about his/her project.
*Reading Counts reports were given to students at the end of last week. I discussed their progress with each individual student so they know how they are doing. Goals are due by March 25.
Coming at the end of this week, students will be in "book clubs" and be choosing a book to read in class before Spring Break. They will start these on Saturday. They should still be reading a book at home and completing their reading logs weekly.
