Lots of cold weather is here!!
Here's what we are doing in Reading:
*PARCC Reading Assessments are next week.
*This week, we are playing some games and reviewing before the tests next week. There are links on our Google Classroom for kids to play. If you haven't seen the Google Classroom for Reading, ask your child to show you. It is a neat place to have assignments and announcements with links for kids to review concepts being learned in class.
*In case of a snow day tomorrow or Friday, I explained the work they should be doing for reading. If kids login to our Google Classroom, the assignment along with links are posted there. Here is the assignment:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Z8xIuJYyUkzUEJc43HqLDM6zID9Jb87vB-lOvog04dE/edit?usp=sharing
*There are books that kids can access to read on the Google Classroom as well as through Storia. Your child's Storia username and password should be in their planner. If they need it, I told them to email me from the Google Classroom page.
*Kids should be reading independently at home and completing reading logs. They also should be taking reading counts quizzes. Goals are due by March 25. I will be printing reports tomorrow and conferencing with kids regarding these on Friday. Look for a paper to come home Friday about this.
Starting next week, all logs should be completed online. If you have an issue with technology, please let me know.

Reading Update 2-9
Lots of exciting things are happening right now!
In reading/writing class this week, we are doing some practice tests for reading/ Students must read 1-3 passages and then write an essay based on what they read. They are working very hard and putting forth a lot of effort. I am impressed with their work so far. Practice Reading tests will go home this week too so please ask your child to see the kinds of questions and stories they are asked to read. Some are tough! A testing schedule went home recently from Mr. Goodwin. Click to view the letter.
Next week, Mrs. Tyrrell will be talking with the students about their writing pieces so they will come home next week.
Reading Logs-We started using our Google Classroom for reading. As a reminder, reading logs can be completed on paper or online during the month of February. In March, students will be required to complete them online to save paper. Ask your child to show you our Google Classroom. If you need help, let me know.
Reading Counts Goals are due by March 25. I will print out reports for kids at the end of next week so they can see their progress. They also check online at anytime by logging in.
OTHER:
-Yearbook order forms went home and money is due by March 7 or online by March 31.

The Leighton leaders are sponsoring a shoe drive called Nike Grind. Nike is has a recycling program where they collect old gym shoes and grind them down to create new surfaces for tracks, playgrounds, and artificial turfs. We are collecting old, worn out gym shoes to donate to this cause. The Nike store at the Aurora outlets is a donation site and they are very excited that we are participating in this program.
The Leighton leaders have put a box outside your classroom for your students to put their donations. They will be collecting and counting the shoes every day. The shoe drive starts today and will last until next Thursday, February 12th. It would be greatly appreciated if you would encourage your students to participate! We have a school goal of 200 shoes...we will be graphing the progress per grade level on a chart by the cafeteria!
REMEMBER...the donations can only be gym shoes with rubber soles, BUT, they don't have to be Nike shoes. So, clean out those closets and bring in your smelly, worn out shoes!!
