Reading Update 11-24

Wishing everyone a happy Thanksgiving!  Enjoy that special time with family and friends.

We took our Reading Summative Friday and that will be sent home tomorrow so please look for it.  It was a tough test that required reading and analyzing across multiple texts.  Students also had to write an essay that went along with the texts.  All of the texts were on Robert E. Lee.

A reading counts report is also being sent home tomorrow.  Reading Counts goals are due by January 13th (slight change from before).  Goals can be found in your child's planners.  Please know that the kids can take Reading Counts quizzes at home or at school.  Please let me know if you don't see one or have questions.

After Thanksgiving, we start our historical fiction books.  The kids are excited to begin!  Check out a previous post with titles and links to summaries, etc.

We are going to do some community service in our room tomorrow.  The kids will make holiday cards and letters that I will send along to some troops.

Again, Happy Thanksgiving!

Reading Update 11-16

We have been reading informational text over the topic of World War 2 to prep us for reading the historical fiction books I posted about last time after Thanksgiving.  The students have loved this topic and have been very interested in what we have been reading.

This Friday will be an informational (all nonfiction text) reading summative that covers these skills;
-main idea and details
-vocabulary word meanings with context clue questions
-author's viewpoint
-text structure
-summarizing

Please check out this link to see a sample of the kind of test that your kids will take in February of this year.  We no longer have OAA's, but they are now called PARCC assessments.  They are a lot tougher!
