Reading Update 9/29/14

Last week, we started our first week of nonfiction.  Our focus was on animals and all small groups read books about animals.  The books covered endangered species, marine life, animal adaptations, and gray whales.  Please ask your child what book he/she read.  

The skill we focused on last week while reading nonfiction was main idea and detail.  We did a mini-project which we will share tomorrow about it.  Look for pictures!

We will continue nonfiction this week with two weeks on Native Americans.  We will be reading about different tribes and comparing/contrasting them.  It should be interesting!

*Reading Counts Goals due by October 22. A report will be given to students tomorrow so they can see their progress so far.  Each child's reading counts goal should be attached in their planners.

*Reading logs are due each Monday.  Please make sure that you sign them each week.  Thanks!

Reading Counts Information

Dear Parents,

     Your 5^th grade students will be expected to do independent reading at home this year as part of their homework. Strong reading skills are crucial to our students being successful. Research has proven that the best way to improve and increase reading skill and vocabulary is by voracious reading.  Beginning this week; your child will be involved in a very important reading program aimed at increasing his or her reading ability by increasing amount of books read.

     The program is called “Reading Counts” and is a program in which children select a book to read, read the book, and then answer questions on a computer about that book.  The book they choose is assigned a particular point level depending on its difficulty and the children earn points depending on how well they do on the computer test they take.  There are over 50,000 books children can choose from, and the list of books, along with the point levels, can be found by going to a link on our class website. The amount of points expected may vary between classrooms and possibly even between students in the same classroom according to student need. Please be sure to check your child’s class website or planner for their specific point goals. Reaching their goal will count as a summative grade for independent reading each quarter.

Mrs. Myers came from the daughters of 1812 to talk to everyone about the Star-Spangled Banner flag.  This flag was stolen in the book we read.

Capture the Flag

We just finished reading Capture the Flag by Kate Messner.  The kids learned that she wrote another book called, Hide and Seek.  They were so excited and want to read it!

                                                                     

To finish up our book, students are writing RAFTS in class.  RAFT stands for Role, Audience, Format, and Topic.  They first have to write about something and then perform it for the class.  I will be videoing this and posting them here for all to see.  Enjoy!
